Monthly EMI after moratorium

—
Live result

How it works

A useful estimate, with the assumptions out in the open.

Simple interest accrues on the amount actually disbursed during the course and moratorium. Unpaid interest, after any confirmed subsidy entered, is added once when EMI repayment starts. Repayment then uses a fixed reducing-balance EMI. GST, insurance, changing rates and lender-specific rounding are excluded.

This result is an educational estimate. Rates, taxes, fees, product rules, and market returns can change.

India-focused guide

What EMI will I pay after my education-loan course and moratorium period?

Enter the sanctioned loan, rate, course duration, post-course moratorium, disbursement pattern and repayment tenure. The calculator estimates simple interest before repayment, applies any confirmed subsidy, capitalises unpaid interest if selected and calculates the reducing-balance EMI.

What this estimate uses

Total education loan sanctioned, Interest rate, Course duration, Moratorium after course, Loan disbursement, Interest during course and moratorium, Repayment tenure after moratorium, Confirmed moratorium interest subsidy, Processing fee.

Important assumption

Simple interest accrues on the amount actually disbursed during the course and moratorium. Unpaid interest, after any confirmed subsidy entered, is added once when EMI repayment starts. Repayment then uses a fixed reducing-balance EMI. GST, insurance, changing rates and lender-specific rounding are excluded.

Detailed guide

Understand the result before using it.

This education-loan calculator separates the course and moratorium phase from the later EMI phase. It estimates simple interest on the amount actually disbursed, applies any confirmed subsidy entered and shows how unpaid interest changes the balance when monthly repayment begins.

01

How the course, moratorium and EMI phases connect

During the course and post-course moratorium, the calculator applies simple monthly interest to the principal released so far. If equal annual disbursement is selected, each academic-year tranche starts accruing interest only when that tranche is released.

If interest is not serviced, the borrower’s unpaid interest—after any confirmed subsidy—is added once to the loan when EMI repayment begins. That opening balance is then amortised through equal monthly instalments on a reducing balance.

FormulaBalance when EMI starts = total principal + unpaid moratorium interest − confirmed subsidy credit

02

Example: ₹15 lakh over a four-year course

These examples use a 9.5% rate, a four-year course, 12 additional moratorium months, 10 years of EMI repayment and a 0.5% processing fee. They show why disbursement timing and interest servicing matter even when the sanctioned amount and rate are identical.

A moratorium does not automatically mean interest-free

RBI’s education-loan FAQ says the Model Education Loan Scheme provides broad guidance and implementing banks can make changes. Interest rates are also set by banks under their approved policies, so the sanction letter controls the actual rate, moratorium, repayment and compounding treatment.

Government interest-subsidy or subvention schemes have separate eligibility, institution, income, loan-limit and claim conditions. Enter only a subsidy amount confirmed by the lender or scheme administrator. The calculator caps that credit at the estimated interest accrued before EMI repayment.

04

Checks to make before accepting the loan

  • Ask for the planned disbursement dates and amounts, not only the sanctioned limit.
  • Confirm whether course-period interest is simple, how it is posted and when capitalisation occurs.
  • Compare the EMI after moratorium with expected take-home pay and existing obligations.
  • Check processing charges, GST, insurance, margin money and collateral requirements separately.
  • Ask whether servicing interest during study earns a rate concession and whether that concession is conditional.
  • Use the lender’s repayment schedule as the final contractual calculation.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is interest charged during an education-loan moratorium?

It commonly accrues even though EMI repayment is deferred. Whether it is paid, subsidised or added to the loan depends on the sanction terms and any applicable scheme.

Why does annual disbursement produce less interest than full disbursement?

Later academic-year tranches are outstanding for fewer months before repayment begins, so they accrue less course-period interest than money released on day one.

Does paying interest during study reduce the later EMI?

Yes in this model. Serviced interest is not added to the repayment principal, so EMI begins on the original loan amount rather than a larger capitalised balance.

Does the calculator determine PM-Vidyalaxmi or CSIS eligibility?

No. Scheme eligibility and the credited amount must be confirmed through the official portal, bank or scheme administrator. Enter only the confirmed subsidy value.

Why might the bank’s EMI be different?

Actual disbursement dates, daily interest, rate changes, grace-period length, rounding, fees, insurance and capitalisation conventions can all change the contractual schedule.
