How it works

A useful estimate, with the assumptions out in the open.

The four target percentages must total 100%. New-money-only mode spreads the entered contribution across underweight assets in proportion to their rupee shortfalls and does not sell anything. Full-rebalance mode calculates the trades required to reach the target exactly after adding the new money. Values are treated as one portfolio at one point in time. Market movement, taxes, exit loads, brokerage, bid-ask spreads and other transaction costs are excluded.

India-focused guide

How much should I invest in or withdraw from each asset to rebalance my portfolio?

Enter the current value of equity, debt, gold and cash, set target percentages that total 100%, and add any new money available. Choose a no-sell plan that directs only the new contribution or a full rebalance that shows exact buy and sell amounts.

Detailed guide

Understand the result before using it.

This calculator turns a target asset allocation into a rupee-level action plan. It compares equity, debt, gold and cash by current value, directs new money toward underweight buckets, or calculates a full set of buys and sells when an exact rebalance is selected.

01

How portfolio drift and rebalancing are calculated

Each current allocation is its asset value divided by the current portfolio total. The calculator compares that weight with the target percentage you enter. Positive drift means the asset is overweight; negative drift means it is underweight.

For a full rebalance, the target rupee amount is calculated from the portfolio total after adding new money. The difference between that target and the current asset value becomes the buy or sell amount.

FormulaTrade for an asset = (portfolio after new money × target weight) − current asset value

02

Example: rebalance an ₹80 lakh portfolio with ₹5 lakh of new money

The default portfolio holds ₹40 lakh in equity, ₹25 lakh in debt, ₹10 lakh in gold and ₹5 lakh in cash. Its target is 50% equity, 30% debt, 10% gold and 10% cash. Before investing the new money, gold is 2.50 percentage points overweight and cash is 3.75 points underweight.

In no-sell mode, the ₹5 lakh contribution is divided among the underweight equity, debt and cash buckets according to their rupee shortfalls. This reduces the largest drift to about 1.76 percentage points, but cannot reach the target exactly because the existing gold holding remains above its target value.

Illustrative default new-money-only allocation
AssetCurrent valueNew money directedAllocation after plan
Equity ₹40.00 lakh ₹1.92 lakh 49.32%
Debt ₹25.00 lakh ₹38,462 29.86%
Gold ₹10.00 lakh ₹0 11.76%
Cash ₹5.00 lakh ₹2.69 lakh 9.05%
03

When new money can replace selling

The calculator also finds the minimum total contribution that could reach every target without reducing an existing holding. It expands the final portfolio until each current asset value fits at or below its target weight, then shows how much new money that requires.

In the default example, reaching the 50/30/10/10 target without selling requires ₹20 lakh of total new money. Because only ₹5 lakh is entered, another ₹15 lakh would be needed. A full rebalance instead sells ₹1.50 lakh of gold and uses that amount together with the ₹5 lakh contribution to complete the target immediately.

FormulaMinimum final portfolio without selling = highest current asset value ÷ that asset’s target weight

04

What to check before placing any trade

  • Choose the target from your goals, time horizon and ability to tolerate risk—not from the calculator.
  • Consider directing SIPs, dividends or fresh savings to underweight assets before selling existing investments.
  • Check capital-gains tax, exit load, brokerage, spread and settlement implications before a full rebalance.
  • Treat cash needed for near-term expenses or emergencies separately if it is not genuinely part of this investment portfolio.
  • Review the mix periodically or after a meaningful life change; avoid reacting to every small market movement.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I rebalance my portfolio without selling?

Sometimes. New-money-only mode sends the contribution to underweight assets and shows the remaining drift. It also estimates the minimum contribution needed to hit the target without reducing any current holding.

Do my target allocation percentages have to total 100%?

Yes. Equity, debt, gold and cash targets must add to exactly 100% so every rupee in the post-plan portfolio has one destination.

Does the calculator include capital-gains tax or exit load?

No. The buy and sell plan is before tax, exit load, brokerage, bid-ask spread and other transaction costs. Check those costs before acting on a full rebalance.

How often should I rebalance my investments?

This calculator does not prescribe a frequency or drift band. Your policy should reflect goals, risk tolerance, costs and tax consequences. Review the portfolio periodically and after material changes rather than responding automatically to every small movement.

Is a 60/30/10 or 50/30/10/10 allocation right for me?

The calculator does not recommend an allocation. SEBI investor material notes that allocation depends on goals, risk tolerance, time horizon and personal circumstances. Use a target appropriate to your own plan or seek regulated advice.
